Frank Gehry Wins Emporis Skyscraper Award
Frank Gehry, the Toronto designer and architect who is making headlines here for his groundbreaking King West Projectcore development with David Mirvish, has recently won an award from the Global Skyscraper Construction Database Site: Emporis. Emporis granted Frank the award not for the King West Project in Toronto, but for work he did in New York City, Manhattan to be exact on the 8 Spruce Tower, also know as "The Beekman" or "New York by Gehry". This building has an extremely unique design, with a facade created with undulating steel, and built using never before seen construction techinques. The tower is 76 floors and just south of the Brooklyn Bridge area, that height translates in 867 feet, and it contains over 1 million square feet of interior space. The building also houses medical services for New York, a School, and high end services for Manhattan's mobile Elite.
The building is a testiment and landmark to his creative genuis and the fact that the greatest skyscraper comes from a Torontioan is no mystery to us here, seeing as how we are now leading the Western World in Skyscraper Construction and Development. We are also seeing a push into new heights never before seen in Canada with 5 towers proposed within 3 weeks of each other over a hieght of 1000 feet, and more to come if word from Pinnacle International means anything, their 1 Yonge project, might put the Oxford and Mirvish proposals to shame.
